Adult Therapy

You Don't Have to Keep Holding Everything Together

Maybe you've become very good at functioning.

You go to work.

You take care of everyone else.

You answer the messages.

You show up for your family.

You get things done.

From the outside, you may look like you're doing just fine.

But inside, you're exhausted.

You're anxious.

You're overwhelmed.

You're disconnected.

You're constantly thinking about what could go wrong.

Or maybe you don't even know exactly what's wrong anymore—you just know that you don't feel like yourself.

Perhaps you're struggling with a relationship, recovering from trauma, dealing with anxiety or depression, navigating a major life transition, or trying to understand why the same patterns keep showing up in your life.

Whatever brought you here, you don't have to figure it out alone.

Therapy can be a place to stop surviving long enough to understand what you need and begin creating a life that feels more like your own.

Adults Come to Therapy for Many Different Reasons

You may be experiencing something very specific.

Or you may simply know that something isn't working anymore.

Adults seek counselling for concerns such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • PTSD and CPTSD
  • Intimate partner violence
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Unhealthy relationship patterns
  • Boundaries
  • People-pleasing
  • Low self-worth
  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Burnout
  • Panic attacks
  • Stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Major life transitions
  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Self-esteem
  • Identity
  • Family difficulties
  • Workplace stress
  • First responder-related experiences
  • Human trafficking and exploitation
  • Sexual violence
  • Family violence
  • Difficulty coping with change
  • Feeling stuck
  • Repeating patterns you don't understand

You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis.

You don't need to know exactly which therapy you need.

You can simply start with what you're experiencing.

When You Have Spent Years Putting Everyone Else First

Many adults have learned to be the reliable one.

The strong one.

The one who takes care of everyone.

The one who keeps the peace.

The one who doesn't need anything.

You may have become so accustomed to putting yourself last that you aren't even sure what you need anymore.

You may say yes when you want to say no.

You may feel guilty for having boundaries.

You may constantly consider everyone else's feelings before your own.

You may feel responsible for keeping everyone happy.

And eventually, you may find yourself thinking:

"Where did I go?"

Therapy can help you reconnect with yourself—not just become better at managing everyone else's needs.

When You Keep Repeating the Same Patterns

Sometimes the reason people come to therapy isn't because of one specific event.

It's because they keep finding themselves in the same situations.

The same relationship dynamics.

The same arguments.

The same feelings.

The same choices.

You may notice that you:

  • Keep choosing emotionally unavailable partners
  • Stay too long in unhealthy relationships
  • Have difficulty setting boundaries
  • Constantly second-guess yourself
  • Feel betrayed repeatedly
  • Walk on eggshells
  • Make decisions from fear
  • Put other people's needs before your own
  • Struggle to leave situations that aren't healthy
  • Feel responsible for other people's emotions

You may wonder:

"Why do I keep doing this?"

Therapy can help you understand the patterns underneath the behaviour rather than simply telling yourself to "make better choices."

Sometimes what feels familiar isn't necessarily what is safe.

And understanding why can be the beginning of doing something different.

When You're Tired of Surviving

You may have spent years getting through things.

You survived the relationship.

The childhood.

The loss.

The trauma.

The divorce.

The workplace.

The crisis.

The transition.

The thing nobody else knows about.

And now you're wondering:

"Is this really all life is supposed to feel like?"

Therapy can be a place to move from simply surviving toward living.

That may mean learning how to regulate your nervous system, process what you've experienced, establish boundaries, rebuild your confidence, reconnect with your identity, and create relationships and routines that support the life you actually want.

Therapy That Meets You Where You Are

At Burch Counselling & Consultation, we don't believe there is one approach that works for every person.

Your experiences, history, relationships, strengths, and goals are unique.

Therapy may incorporate:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helping you identify patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours and develop new ways of responding.

Somatic Therapy

Exploring how experiences are held and experienced within the body and developing greater awareness and regulation.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Understanding your experiences through the lens of safety, empowerment, choice, and resilience.

Internal Family Systems-Informed Work

Exploring the different parts of yourself with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.

Brainspotting

A therapeutic approach that may help access and process experiences that can be difficult to reach through talking alone.

Mindfulness

Developing greater awareness of thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and the present moment.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Identifying strengths, resources, possibilities, and the future you want to create.

Movement-Based Therapy

For appropriate clients, therapy may incorporate gentle movement, breathwork, and body awareness to support nervous system regulation and reconnection with the body.

What Can Change

Therapy isn't about becoming a completely different person.

It's about becoming more connected to yourself.

Over time, you may begin to:

  • Feel calmer
  • Sleep better
  • Understand your emotions
  • Recognize your triggers
  • Feel more confident
  • Set healthier boundaries
  • Trust your decisions
  • Communicate more effectively
  • Develop healthier relationships
  • Stop repeating old patterns
  • Feel more connected to your body
  • Understand your nervous system
  • Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
  • Process painful experiences
  • Reconnect with your identity
  • Feel more comfortable saying no
  • Experience greater self-worth
  • Feel more present
  • Have more hope for the future

And perhaps most importantly:

You may begin to feel like yourself again.

Finding the Right Therapist Matters

Therapy is personal.

You are trusting someone with parts of your life that you may not share with many people.

You deserve a therapist who listens without judgment, understands the complexity of your experience, and works collaboratively with you.

At Burch Counselling & Consultation, our therapists bring different experiences, specialties, and therapeutic approaches to the practice.

Our goal isn't simply to tell you what to do.

It is to walk alongside you while you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and create meaningful change.

You Don't Have to Figure it All Out Before You Start

You may know exactly what you need help with.

Or you may only know:

"I'm not okay."

"I'm exhausted."

"I keep doing this and I don't know why."

"I don't feel like myself anymore."

"I want things to change."

That's enough.

You can bring the questions.

You can bring the uncertainty.

You can bring the messy parts.

We'll start where you are.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult Therapy

Do I need to know what I want to work on before starting therapy?

No. Many people come to therapy knowing that something doesn't feel right but aren't sure exactly what they need. Your therapist can help you identify your concerns, goals, and priorities.

What if I've never been to therapy before?

That's completely okay. Your first session is an opportunity to get to know your therapist, discuss what brought you in, and begin identifying what you would like support with.

Can therapy help if I seem to be functioning well?

Absolutely. You don't have to be falling apart for therapy to be helpful. Many people appear to be functioning well while experiencing significant anxiety, exhaustion, relationship difficulties, trauma, or emotional distress internally.

What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?

Different therapists and approaches work differently for different people. A previous experience that wasn't helpful doesn't mean therapy can't be helpful now. It can be useful to talk about what did and didn't work for you previously.

Can I talk about relationships in individual therapy?

Yes. Relationships are often an important part of individual therapy. You can explore relationship patterns, boundaries, communication, attachment, trust, conflict, and your own needs and responses.

Do you offer virtual therapy for adults?

Yes. Virtual counselling is available throughout Ontario, Canada, and worldwide with in-person appointments available in Northumberland County, located Port Hope.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

You can review our therapist profiles to learn about each therapist's specialties, approaches, and style. If you're unsure, you can contact the clinic and we can help you determine who may be the best fit for your needs.
